Transportation

Getting to Tromsø

By air

Tromsø is situated at almost 70 degrees north, far above the Arctic Circle. If you are travelling to Tromsø from abroad, Oslo is the hub. There are several daily flights from Oslo Airport Gardermoen to Tromsø. The flight time is about two hours long. Tromsø’s airport code is TOS.

Major airlines connecting U.S./Canada and Norway are SAS, KLM, Lufthansa, Icelandair, Air France and Air Canada. From Europe, there are flights to Oslo from various airports including London, Manchester, Munich, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Amsterdam, Brussels, Paris, Helsinki, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Reykjavik, Milan, Madrid, Prague, Riga, Warsaw, Budapest, and Vienna.

By car

For directions, check Google maps.

By boat

The Coastal Steamer (Hurtigruten) is generally considered to be the world’s most beautiful voyage, and is an excellent way of going to Tromsø – if you have the time and the money. The Costal Steamer sails from Bergen (northbound) and Kirkenes (southbound) every day. Check Hurtigruten for more information.

By bus

Express buses connect Tromsø and major cities in Northern Norway, especially Narvik (appr. 4 hours), from where you can go by train to Stockholm (if you have more time than money). For schedules, check NorWay Bus Express.

By train

Yes, there is a Tromsø railway station. It’s a pub. (In other words, no trains to Tromsø.)

Between the airport and the city center

To travel to and from Tromsø Airport Langnes you can take the airport express, city buses or taxi.

We recommend taking a bus, as it is cheap and convenient. You can take routs 24, 40, and 42. The best way to buy a ticket is to download the Troms Billet app, but you can also pay in cash as you get on the bus (Norwegian crowns only). To get to the bus stop from Terminal 1, you need to go to the lowest level of the parking lot and go across the lot to the street, as in the following diagram.

We suggest using Google Maps (or similar apps) to figure out the details of your trip.

There is also a taxi rank outside the airport terminal as well as several taxi ranks in downtown Tromsø. The taxi fare from the airport to the city centre during the daytime on weekdays is approximately 250 Norwegian crowns. A higher fare applies on weekends and in the evening/at night. For pre-bookings call Tromsø Taxi on phone +47 03011 or Din Taxi on phone +47 02045.

Between the center and the university

Buses number 20, 21, and 34 are going to/from the city center and UiT campus. The main bus stop for all three busses in the city center would be ‘Smørtorget’, close to Radisson Blu Hotel Tromsø.

Again, the best way to buy a bus ticket is to download the Troms Billet app, but you can also pay in cash as you get on the bus (Norwegian crowns only).

You can use Mazemap to find your way within the university campus.
